One kiss could be the last.

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne… it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

Pokemon Indigo League #ReadThemAllThon

ReadThemAllThon
Pokemon Indigo League #ReadThemAllThon is hosted by Aentee at Read at Midnight.

Here's everything you need to know:
  • The Pokemon Indigo League #ReadThemAllThon is a 3 weeks long reading challenge based on the Kanto’s Indigo League. Long-time fans of the series would recognise this as the first set of gyms Ash Ketchum had to conquer in his quest to become the Pokemon Master. Now you, my friends, will also embark on a journey to become the very best. Instead of fighting gym battles, you’ll be reading books instead!
  • The read-a-thon will run for 3 weeks between Sunday 14th August to Sunday 4th September.
  • You can sign up anytime between now and the end of the read-a-thon.
  • Create a sign-up post on your own blog/booktube/booklr/etc with the books you will read for the challenge below and title it #ReadThemAllThon TBR or something similar. Then add your link to the link widget below. Please add a link back to this post!
  • There are 8 reading challenges within this read-a-thon, based on the 8 gyms that are in the Indigo League. Earn a badge every time you complete a book!

I must confess that I wasn't a huge fan of Pokemon growing up. I liked it, but I was confused by how things worked, especially the card game. I remember getting cards after Tae Kwon Do classes as a kid, but I really only cared about how cute they were. But maybe I'll start to understand it better with it becoming popular again?

ReadThemAllThon-Badge01-Boulder
Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning
This has been on my TBR for a while, and while asking about NA recs, this popped up. I'm not sure if most people consider it NA or Adult, but I can't wait to try it!

ReadThemAllThon-Badge02-Cascader
The Problem With Forever by Jennifer L. Armentrout
I have to admit that books rarely make me cry. I think maybe two have actually made me shed a tear. So while I doubt I'll cry, I probably will get a little emotional.

ReadThemAllThon-Badge03-Thunder
Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman
Yeah, I still haven't read this one. But it's perfect timing since the sequel will be coming out soon!

ReadThemAllThon-Badge04-Rainbow
Black Iris by Leah Raeder (Elliot Finley Wake)
One of the goals that I made for this year was to read more books featuring LGBTQIA+ characters, and I haven't been doing well so far. But I'm really excited for this book!

ReadThemAllThon-Badge05-Soul
Torn by Jennifer L. Armentrout
I love JLA so much, and I can't wait to see what happens. After the ending of Wicked, I'm pretty excited/nervous!

ReadThemAllThon-Badge06-Marsh
Visions of Heat by Nalini Singh
I recently read the first book, Slave to Sensation, and loved it! Now I can't wait to read the rest of the series!

ReadThemAllThon-Badge07-Flame
Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins
I started this one a while ago (I think I only read a chapter), but ran out of time before I had to return it. I'm a bit wary because I since the player trope already, and I can't stand that trope. And thank God Goodreads has lists based on cover colors!

ReadThemAllThon-Badge08-Earth
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Yet another super popular book that I haven't read. I think I'm part of the 1% of the population that hasn't read this series.

So here are all the books I plan to read! I've chosen Ponyta. I remember I loved this Pokemon because I thought it was so cute. Cuteness has been the most important factor in choosing Pokemon. I'll be honest and admit I don't know how good this Pokemon is, but I like how it looks.

Top Ten Tuesday #63: Ten Things Books Have Made Me Want To Do or Learn About After Reading Them

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

This Week's Topic:
Ten Things Books Have Made Me Want To Do or Learn About After Reading Them

This is a very challenging topic, because I can't think of many things books have made me want to do or remember what books they're related to. So I'm just going to wing it!

1.
Become fluent in a second language.
I took French for 6 years throughout middle and high school, but I never became fluent. I'd also love to start learning a third language.

2.
Travel the world.
As a college student, I don't have the means to travel much. I would love to one day travel to some of the places I've always wanted to see, like Japan, Norway, and New Zealand.

3.
Meet new people.
I have a lot of trouble meeting new people and making friends, and I wish I had that talent that so many people seem to have.

4.
Read more fairytales.
I read a ton of retellings, but I've never read the original story. I know the original, but I've never taken the time to actually read it. The only original I've read is East of the Sun, West of the Moon, a Norwegian folk tale.

5.
Learn how to paint or how to art.
I have no artistic talent, or at least drawing/painting/sketching talent. I think that talent is something you're born with, so I think I'll never amount to much, but I'd love to take a watercolor class.

6.
Learn how to snowboard/ski.
I'm terrified of breaking my legs/arms/body, so I've been hesitant to learn. I also hate the cold so that's been holding me back too.

7.
Face my fears.
So many characters are forced to face their fears and be brave, and I wish I could finally face everything that scares me. But that might take a while to face everything.

8.
Learn how to horseback ride.
I've ridden horses at camp before, but I've never actually learned the proper way to do it. And how to not accidentally have them walk through poop and make them start sneezing uncontrollably.

9.
Learn more about history.
Many books I've read have been set in various historical periods, and I'd love to learn more about them. I've always loved history, but I'd love to work more on learning about different places through the ages.

10.
Write a book.
I've started working on a couple, but I've reached the point where I'm having a little bit of writer's block. I'm hoping I can work through it and finally get back to writing, because I really miss it.

So I guess I kind of stuck with the topic? I know I'm going a little off topic with some, but as long as I can connect it to books, I guess I'm good.

Summer Blogger Promo Tour ~ Cheyenne from Once Upon A Time A Review

Hello, I'm Cheyenne and I blog at Once Upon A Time A Review and today I will be discussing 5 Blogging Essentials that makes blogging a little easier. These are things that I would have loved to know when I first started blogging in April 2014 and back then everything was a mess, but now I'm finally growing into the blogger that I want to become and I'm learning new things each day. I hope all you people looking to start blogging or are new bloggers find this post helpful let me jump right in.

1. Some sort of planning system
You need a planning system and I'm not even joking. I was a person who thought that I could do it without a planning system. That's how I did it for maybe the first year of blogging and after that I started using a planning system. You will get busy and you will forget when you say you will have something done by. This planning system can be anything and a combinations of things. A planning system is also just a great way to stay organized in general.

2. You want to Schedule Posts
Again at first I didn't wrote the post the day of for the first year of blogging, but I got busy and posts weren't getting up. You want to schedule posts ahead of time. You want to sit down and take day to write a few blog posts at time, then when there's a day you can't blog then you will have those posts up and ready.

3. Postfity or something like it
This is website that I just most recently discovered and it's a life saver. I can schedule tweets and that will post them on Twitter. I use this mostly for scheduling promotion tweets for my various posts on my blog. I feel this important because eventually there's days where you can't promote your blog. There's different websites like this out there, but Postfity is free and you can do 10 day. I swear this will free up so much time.

4. Social Media
Lizzie talked about this in her post she did on my blog and I would say this is an essential. Social Media helps you interact with others as well as market your blog. This is important if you want to grow you blogs following. Websites like Netgalley and publisher rely on stats, though getting ARCs isn't important and shouldn't be your main focus. You don't have to every single social media account out there. I personally use Twitter and Goodreads the most. I do have a Facebook page, but its not as easy as using Twitter and Goodreads.

5. You Do You
I know this is easier said than done. You don't have to do posts that everyone is doing. Yeah they are probably are very popular and you might get some more views, but if you don't love the post then you shouldn't post it. Do posts that you enjoy writing and that you want to do, do things your way. Being different is an easier way to stand out. Your blog is suppose to be a reflection of you and should always be a reflection of you. Readers can tell the difference between a passionate post and a filler post.

I had so much fun writing this post, it gave me idea for future posts. It also made me wish that I started doing these things right off the bat. I hope this post helps someone. Thanks for having me and reading this post. Remember keep looking for your Once Upon A Time.

Summer TBR Wipeout 2016 Challenge Update #1

1
The Summer TBR Wipeout Challenge is hosted by The Candid Cover.

I'm a bit late with posting my first update, but better late than never! Here is my sign up post.

Books Read
~Oblivion by Jennifer L. Armentrout - I absolutely loved the Lux series, so it was great reading Obsidian from Daemon's point of view. I need to buy the ebook version, so I can read his POV of Onyx and Opal. Super annoyed that I have to buy both versions.

~A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab - I'd heard so many great things about this author, and when she did a signing in Susan Dennard, it was a perfect time to buy her book! While the different Londons and the traveling aspect confused me a bit, I did really like this book can can't wait to read the sequel!

~Fire Falling by Elise Kova - This was a disappointment. I really liked Air Awakens, but this just seemed to fall flat. I do plan on reading Earth's End though.

Currently Reading
~Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas - I started this one when it was released by got sidetracked by other releases. Now I've heard spoilers and am nervous to get back to it. Wish me luck!

~Slave to Sensation by Nalini Singh - This is the first adult book I've read, so I'm really excited! I've heard great things about this series.

Books I Plan to Read (A Tentative List)
~Earth's End by Elise Kova
~Riders by Veronica Rossi
~Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman
~The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater

Waiting on Wednesday #37: "Strange the Dreamer" by Laini Taylor

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly event, hosted Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Strange the Dreamer (Strange the Dreamer, #1)

Title: "Strange the Dreamer"
Author: Laini Taylor
Expected Publication: September 27, 2016

Strange the Dreamer is the story of:

the aftermath of a war between gods and men
a mysterious city stripped of its name
a mythic hero with blood on his hands
a young librarian with a singular dream
a girl every bit as perilous as she is imperiled
alchemy and blood candy, nightmares and godspawn, moths and monsters, friendship and treachery, love and carnage.

Welcome to Weep.
So... the blurb doesn't really make sense, but at the same time it sounds pretty cool. I have no clue what to expect, but that's kind of how things were when I read Daughter of Smoke and Bone. But the cover is gorgeous and I love the colors and the tear down the middle. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what it's like!

Top Ten Tuesday #62: Ten Books Set Outside the US

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

This Week's Topic:
Ten Books Set Outside the US

1.
Passenger (Passenger, #1)
While the book starts off in the US, Etta and Nicholas spend most of the book traveling from country to country, with places in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

2.
A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic, #1)
All of the places visited here are London, but different versions set in different worlds.

3.
Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1)
Even though it does have fantasy elements, it's still set in a futuristic dystopian China, France, Sahara Desert, and Moon.

4.
Starflight (Starflight, #1)
I'd say that being set in outer space would be pretty outside of the US.

5.
The Falconer (The Falconer, #1)
This is the only book I've read set in Scotland, and I hope to find more set there as it's incredibly beautiful!

6.
Valkyrie Rising (Valkyrie, #1)
I don't know of any other books set in Norway, but I'd like to find more.

7.
The Madman’s Daughter (The Madman’s Daughter, #1)
I really loved this series and it's set in England, the South Pacific, and Scotland in total.

8.
Something Strange and Deadly (Something Strange and Deadly, #1)
Yes, the first book is set in Philadelphia, but the second and third are set in France and Egypt respectively.

9.
The Gathering Storm (Katerina, #1)
I loved this series, as it was set in Imperial Russia, a setting that I'm absolutely obsessed with.

10.
Splintered (Splintered, #1)
Even though it begins in Texas, I'd say that it's mostly set in Wonderland, and I loved the creepiness of it.

So here are some of the books I've read that are set outside of the US. I have read a few more, but overall I haven't read that many. I'm hoping to read more books set in new places.

Summer Blog Promo Tour ~ Claire from Blank Slaters

Hey, guys! I'm excited to introduce to you Claire from Blank Slaters! She decided to do the Summer Lovin' Book Tag! Enjoy!

1. Pick a book with an attention grabbing first line.
Definitely The Young Elites by Marie Lu. That first line: “I’m going to die tomorrow morning” just grabs you and hooks you in. Marie Lu is such a fantastic author and I really love all of her books. The Young Elites definitely grabs your attention setting up so many questions that will be answered throughout the book.

2. Too hot to go out: Pick a book for a day in.
I would have to say The Archived by Victoria Schwab. That book is so dark and haunting, it is definitely the type of book you will want to get comfortable for because it is just THAT good. Also, it is good Winter read (though the book takes place in the summer) that you should curl up with a blanket and cocoa with!

3. Summer Road Trip: Pick a book you would take with you on the road.
Definitely Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson. That book is so cute and such a great summery read. I haven’t read Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour yet, but SInce You’ve Been Gone is definitely a road trip read. It’s long, well written, fun and well...summery!

4. Ice Tea Goodness: Pick a book with a cold setting.
Ew I hate tea. Anyway, a book with a cold setting, I would say Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys. I didn’t particularly enjoy this book, I know an unpopular opinion, but it takes place in a cold place!

5. Nasty Sunburn: A book you really disliked this year.
The Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye. That book was one of my most anticipated reads and honestly, it just fell flat. The characters, the plot, the magic. All of it. Though the writing wasn’t horrible, I was expecting so much more.

6. Sizzling Summer Reads: Name one of your favorite books this year.
Hmm, definitely A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas. I know, everyone knows this one was really good. But if you want honesty *shrugs* it would definitely be ACOMAF. It was so well written and definitely one of Sarah’s best works!

Thank you guys so much and thank you Lizzie for hosting me on her blog! :)

Passage, n.
i. A brief section of music composed of a series of notes and flourishes.
ii. A journey by water; a voyage.
iii. The transition from one place to another, across space and time.

In one devastating night, violin prodigy Etta Spencer loses everything she knows and loves. Thrust into an unfamiliar world by a stranger with a dangerous agenda, Etta is certain of only one thing: she has traveled not just miles but years from home. And she’s inherited a legacy she knows nothing about from a family whose existence she’s never heard of. Until now.

Nicholas Carter is content with his life at sea, free from the Ironwoods—a powerful family in the colonies—and the servitude he’s known at their hands. But with the arrival of an unusual passenger on his ship comes the insistent pull of the past that he can’t escape and the family that won’t let him go so easily. Now the Ironwoods are searching for a stolen object of untold value, one they believe only Etta, Nicholas’ passenger, can find. In order to protect her, he must ensure she brings it back to them—whether she wants to or not.

Together, Etta and Nicholas embark on a perilous journey across centuries and continents, piecing together clues left behind by the traveler who will do anything to keep the object out of the Ironwoods’ grasp. But as they get closer to the truth of their search, and the deadly game the Ironwoods are playing, treacherous forces threaten to separate Etta not only from Nicholas but from her path home... forever.

Waiting on Wednesday #36: "Furthermore" by Tahereh Mafi

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly event, hosted Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Furthermore

Title: "Furthermore"
Author: Tahereh Mafi
Expected Publication: August 30, 2016

There are only three things that matter to twelve-year-old Alice Alexis Queensmeadow: Mother, who wouldn’t miss her; magic and color, which seem to elude her; and Father, who always loved her. The day Father disappears from Ferenwood he takes nothing but a ruler with him. But it’s been almost three years since then, and Alice is determined to find him. She loves her father even more than she loves adventure, and she’s about to embark on one to find the other.

But bringing Father home is no small matter. In order to find him she’ll have to travel through the mythical, dangerous land of Furthermore, where down can be up, paper is alive, and left can be both right and very, very wrong. Her only companion is a boy named Oliver whose own magical ability is based in lies and deceit—and with a liar by her side in land where nothing is as it seems, it will take all of Alice's wits (and every limb she's got) to find Father and return home to Ferenwood in one piece. On her quest to find Father Alice must first find herself—and hold fast to the magic of love in the face of loss.
I feel like I've been waiting for this book for forever. For the longest time it was just a title and small synopsis, with no information as to when it might be published. And maybe the wait felt longer because Ignite Me was released and I needed more of Tahereh Mafi's writing to help fill the void in my chest that was left by Juliette, Warner, and Kenji. But there's now a date and a beautiful cover, so now I can finally count down the days!

Top Ten Tuesday #61: Ten Facts About Me

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

This Week's Topic:
Ten Facts About Me

This is going to be hard. I feel like I'm super boring, so bare with me while I try to think of anything interesting about myself.

1.
As much as I hate to admit it, I was a huge Twi-hard when I was 12. I read Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse right after each other. I even begged my mom to take me to the midnight release of Breaking Dawn. Needless to say, she was not happy to be at Barnes & Noble surrounded by other Twi-hards who had cosplayed.

2.
I actually never finished Breaking Dawn. The book came out almost 8 years ago, and I still have one or two hundred pages left. I quit reading because I hated what was happening. Ugh, Renesme.

3.
I haven't been to many signings. I think I've been to three. Thanks publishers for almost never stopping in Michigan. Marissa Meyer actually had a stop in MI for Winter that was two days after my birthday, but it was 5 hours away.

4.
Yes. I really am 20 years old. I'm super short (5'2") and I don't look that old to begin with, so I typically get mistaken for a high schooler, sometimes even a middle schooler despite the fact that I'll be 21 this year.

5.
I'm a huge cat person. I've been surrounded by cats since I was born, and probably thought I was one at one point. I don't have a picture, but my cat of the four we have now is named Kazi. She's a really chubby (15 pounds) black and white cat with golden eyes. She loves to snuggle.

6.
I started "reading" at a young age. I can't remember when I started reading, but I know that when I was really little (still in diapers), I'd look at the book pages and would pretend to read. I was probably imitating my dad.

7.
I have a tendency to forget about library due dates and end up with fines. I really need to get better at remembering dates, but at least I'm supporting my library!

8.
I don't watch much TV. It's usually because I work late and just want to go to bed when I get home. However, I do love Orphan Black, The Daily Show, and The Nightly Show. I'm also trying to rewatch Teen Titans, and America's Next Top Model marathons are my weakness.

9.
I recently started getting into comics. I've become obsessed with the Teen Titans, so I'm trying to work my way through all their comics. It can just be hard to figure out where to start with different superheros and villains.

10.
I'm working on a few different WIPs. I think I'm what's preventing myself from getting further along with them. I think my anxiety and perfectionism are keeping me from continuing them. But Camp NaNo is this month so I'm going to force myself to get back to them!

So I guess those are ten facts about me. I'm super interesting. Right?! Just kidding, I feel like I'm actually pretty boring.

With any great change, there is always strife, and the Covenant University has become the frontline between pure-bloods who want the Breed Order reinstated and the half-bloods who want the right to control their own destinies.

Fate has other plans.

The violence is escalating and war between the races seems inevitable, and it couldn’t come at a worse time. Hyperion may be out of commission, but Josie and Seth know they have only earned a reprieve.  Seth must get Josie fully prepared, which means controlling her newfound abilities, and they need to find the other demigods before the Titans do.

But the gods are sensing a greater threat.

Only one thing is more dangerous than a bunch of starved Titans, and that’s an out-of-control Apollyon. The aether in Josie is drawing Seth in deeper, and when lust mixes with love and gives way to power, he knows being close to her is not only dangerous to her, but to everyone around them, but letting her go requires a level of selflessness that just isn’t Seth’s style.

The paths taken in the past are becoming the roads of the future.

Just as chaos breaks out, familiar faces from the past return, complicating the already strained bond between Josie and Seth, and when the danger from the Titans erupts with devastating consequences, the dark allure of power calls to Seth again, but this time Josie might not be able to pull him back.

And when the struggle between power and love becomes the deadliest battleground, there may be no salvation.

Then there’s Ren Owens, the sexy, tattooed Elite member of the Order who has been sharing Ivy’s bed and claiming her heart. Their chemistry is smoking hot, but Ivy knows that Ren has always valued his duty to the Order above all else—he could never touch her if he knew the truth. That is, if he let her live at all. Yet how can she live with herself if she lies to him?

But as the Fae Prince begins to close in on Ivy, intent on permanently opening the gates to the Otherworld, Ivy is running out of options. If she doesn’t figure out who she can trust—and fast—it’s not only her heart that will be torn apart, but civilization itself.
I don't think I'm emotionally and mentally prepared for this book. With the ending of Wicked, I'm terrified to know how all of that will affect everything, especially Ivy and Ren's relationship. Please don't break my heart! Plus this is one of the few paranormal/fantasy NA books that I know about, so any suggestions would be great!

Top Ten Tuesday #60: Ten Books I Enjoyed That Have Under 2000 Ratings On Goodreads

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

This Week's Topic:
Ten Books I Enjoyed That Have Under 2000 Ratings on Goodreads

Books I Have Read
1.
Dearly, Departed (Gone With the Respiration, #1)
This one has more like 9,000 ratings, but it's still an underrated books. However, this sequel has under 2,000 ratings. So sad there isn't going to be a third book in this series.

2.
Masque of the Red Death (Masque of the Red Death, #1)
Both this book and its sequel has more than 2,000 ratings, but it's still not a widely popular duology.

3.
Ice
This one has a little more than 2,000 ratings, but it's not nearly as popular as the other two East of the Sun, West of the Moon retellings that I know of.

4.
Enchanted Ivy
It has just over 2,000 ratings. I really liked it, so it's sad to see that not many people know about it.

5.
The Gathering Storm (Katerina, #1)
It has a little more than 3,000 ratings, which is sad because I loved it. If you like Imperial Russia, paranormal creatures, and a fight between good and evil, you should definitely read it!

Books on My TBR
6.
The Unnaturalists (The Unnaturalists, #1)
I bought this book a couple years ago, and am hoping to finally read it soon. It only has about 1,600 ratings.

7.
Stork (Stork, #1)
It only has about 2,500 ratings, so it's close enough. It's inspired by Norse lore and I can't wait to see what elements it has of it!

8.
A Conspiracy of Alchemists (The Chronicle of Light and Shadow, #1)
This is another book I bought a couple years ago while I was obsessed with Steampunk. I still love it, but it can be hard to find it well executed.

9.
A Study in Silks (The Baskerville Affair, #1)
Another book I bought while I was super into Steampunk.

10.
A Curious Tale of the In-Between
I loved her YA books, and I still need to try her MG work. I'm kind of surprised by how few ratings it has, less than 1,000.

I split this into books I have read and books I have on my TBR because I wasn't sure how many books I read had under 2,000 ratings. I'm sure there are more, I just can't think of them right off the top of my head. Have you read any of these underrated books?
