I have far too many opinions about books and created this blog to contain all of my thoughts.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16060429852764291896noreply@blogger.comBlogger452125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1780703688313800188.post-30035873742205873962018-06-11T15:48:00.000-04:002018-06-11T15:48:13.675-04:00#1KBE A Thousand Beginnings and Endings Reading Challenge

I'm the literal worst at sticking with reading challenges and stuff, but I keep signing up for them anyway.

#1KBE Reading Challenge is celebrating the upcoming release of A Thousand Beginnings and Endings, a book featuring retellings of various Asian mythologies and legends. This includes stories from East Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.

I'm so excited for this challenge. I know that the majority of the retellings I've read come from Western mythology, so I can't wait to read this upcoming book to learn more about Asian mythology and legend. Also, I have read some of these authors' works: Julie Kagawa, Cindy Pon, Melissa de la Cruz, Sona Charaipotra, Roshani Chokshi, and Renee Ahdieh. However, I plan to mostly read new authors.

<img alt="1KBE Challenge Board final.png" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-8988" data-attachment-id="8988" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-description="" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="1KBE Challenge Board final" data-large-file="https://readatmidnight.files.wordpress.com/2018/06/1kbe-challenge-board-final.png?w=656?w=656" data-medium-file="https://readatmidnight.files.wordpress.com/2018/06/1kbe-challenge-board-final.png?w=656?w=300" data-orig-file="https://readatmidnight.files.wordpress.com/2018/06/1kbe-challenge-board-final.png?w=656" data-orig-size="1024,1024" data-permalink="https://readatmidnight.com/2018/06/06/1kbe-a-thousand-beginnings-and-endings-reading-challenge/1kbe-challenge-board-final/" height="400" src="https://readatmidnight.files.wordpress.com/2018/06/1kbe-challenge-board-final.png?w=656" width="400" />

I plan on reading the upper left corner diagonal. Here is my planned reading:

Cindy Pon: Sacrifice (I haven't really been a fan of her other books, but I hope this changes my mind)

Elsie Chapman: Along the Indigo (I haven't read any of her work, so I'm excited to try it)

Ellen Oh: Spirit Hunters (I've read some middle grade recently, and I'm looking forward to reading more)

Aisha Saeed: Written in the Stars (I've seen this cover a few times, but I just hadn't read it yet)

This challenge goes from June 10 (yesterday) to July 1, so I think I should be able to read everything. I have a bunch of other library books checked out so I need to get reading!

Are joining this reading challenge? Have you read any other these books? What did you think of them?
SapphicAThon is hosted by Tasha, Amelie, Elise, Jamieson, Miriam.

SapphicAThon is a readathon where all you have to do is read books that feature f/f romances. There is also a bingo board with challenges, but you don't need to follow it.

<img alt="s9GQ_pSa.jpg" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5266" data-attachment-id="5266" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-description="" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="s9GQ_pSa" data-large-file="https://catsandpaperbacks.files.wordpress.com/2017/09/s9gq_psa.jpg?w=640?w=640" data-medium-file="https://catsandpaperbacks.files.wordpress.com/2017/09/s9gq_psa.jpg?w=640?w=300" data-orig-file="https://catsandpaperbacks.files.wordpress.com/2017/09/s9gq_psa.jpg?w=640" data-orig-size="800,800" data-permalink="https://catsandpaperbacks.wordpress.com/2017/10/31/sapphicathon-details-and-challenges-rec-list/s9gq_psa/" height="400" src="https://catsandpaperbacks.files.wordpress.com/2017/09/s9gq_psa.jpg?w=640" width="400" />

I don't plan on trying to get a bingo, since my library doesn't have many f/f books and I don't have much money to buy books right now.

Here are some of the books I plan on reading:

Ash by Malinda Lo

Otherbound by Corinne Duyvis

A History of Blood and Glitter by Hannah Moskowitz

The Seafarer's Kiss by Julia Ember

Girls Made of Snow and Glass by Melissa Bashardoust

I'm only setting my goal for five books because of other readathons, but I'm hoping I can read more.

What do you plan on reading?
#ReadersCrossing is hosted by Aentee at Read at Midnight

#ReadersCrossing is inspired by Animal Crossing Pocket Camp, a game I'm completely obsessed with. The reading challenge is a bingo board with a number of paths and challenges you can complete for points. I'm always terrible at keeping up with these challenges, but I'm determined to do much better this time. Plus, it also helps that I LOVE Animal Crossing and I'm almost done with the semester.

Remember December is hosted by Kathy at Books & Munches.

The Rules

Post a blogpost saying you’ll be joining me trying to reach all those goals and challenges we committed ourselves to throughout the year.

Share your list of challenges, goals and whatnot and state what you’re going to try and reach / tick off during this month’s read-a-thon.

If you’re sharing your updates on social media, use #RemNovember so we can follow up on each other!

Overall, life has been crazy for me. I have so much going on, so I haven't been able to read much. This means that I a little behind on my reading challenges on goals. I'm hoping that things slow down this month so I can get some reading done.

My Goals

Catch up on my diverse reading challenges

Catch up on my dystopia reading challenge

Catch up on my steampunk reading challenge

Catch up on my graphic novels reading challenge

Catch up on my new release reading challenge

Catch up on my fantasy reading challenge

Read some of the books I recently got in the mail

Read some of the books I've set to the side

Fortunately, a lot of books I plan to read fit multiple challenges. I'm going to try to post updates about the books I read. I don't have a super high goal, I just want to get some books read and I'm leaving things open.

Do you plan on joining? What do you plan on reading?
The Rules:

Begin at the bottom, with the sign that says ‘trick or treat.’

As you follow the path you will come across sign posts, these sign posts will give you your challenge instructions.

Sometimes the signposts will simply give you your prompt. Other times you will have to choose between two different prompts.

If you have to choose between two prompts, you will then follow the path in the direction of your chosen prompt.

At no point should you ever be moving DOWN the map. You should always be moving from the bottom to the top.

Continue up the map until you reach the end of the path.

To save space, the signposts only have part of the prompt written, they should be fairly easy to figure out, but there is also a table of all the prompts written in full (scroll down a bit to see it) just in case anything isn’t clear enough.

At the end of the path your character will be waiting for you! There are five characters in total.

For the millions who
log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life. The
obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe,
some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit.
Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a
bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game illegally. But
the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been
easy. Needing to make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks
into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only
to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight
sensation.

Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked
when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young
billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on
the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security
problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose,
Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune
that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a
sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.

Bookish Bingo is a super cool feature created by Bekka at Pretty Deadly Reviews that I love to follow. It provides a bunch of great challenges, and you want to try to get as many bingos as possible!

Wow, had no clue "bookish" wouldn't show up with my background. Well... I have been meaning to make changes anyways.
I ended up only getting two bingos. I actually totally forgot about the board, but a bunch of books I read fortunately fit the challenges.

So Bout of Books is over, and it went pretty well. I read quite a bit and finished a few books, but sadly life got in the way a few days so I wasn't able to read or accomplish as much as I had hoped.
I accomplished 4 of my goals (finish Serpentine and Uninvited and read The Young Elites). I also decided and started my books for #RainbowReadathon17 and #WWReadathon, so I started Slasher Girls and Monster Boys. I'm not someone who loves scary things, so some of these stories have really creeped me out!
In total, I read 829 pages and finished 3 books. I also started 2 others. I haven't finished my Mages Quest yet, but I'm going to make sure I finish it today. I didn't complete 3 challenges, but those are always something I have trouble with. However, I did participate in a chat, and that's something I never do! I can only hope I can get this much done for the next Bout of Books!
These are all books I've really enjoyed, so I want to spread the word. Sure, The Young Elites is popular, but I think Susan Dennard (especially her Something Strange and Deadly trilogy), Lia Habel, and Megan Shepherd deserve more love and attention. Yesterday was pretty disappointing, but I didn't get home until 6pm and then I had to make dinner. I was pretty exhausted, so I didn't have much motivation. Hoping today will be better!
As you can see, this was a huge reading day for me. I'm hoping I can finish at least one more book, as I primarily am hoping to finish my Mage Quest for #TheReadingQuest! So I finished one of my goals, and that was to finish Serpentine.

#TheReadingQuest is hosted by Aentee at Read at Midnight. Artwork is by CW at Read, Think, Ponder.

For complete instructions, go to Aentee's blog, but here are the basics:

The basic mechanics of the reading challenge is simple: it’s based on a
bingo board (termed The Quest Board for our purposes), each square on
the board represents a stage (or reading prompt) you must complete.
There is one crucial variation, the path you take on the bingo board is entirely dependent on your chosen Character Class.

Along with the
separate Character Class quest levels (Purple Squares), the centre of
the Quest Board is a conglomeration of Side Quests (Blue Squares)! Complete these challenges to earn extra points and bonus experience for your character.

<img alt="Reading Quest Board" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-8323" data-attachment-id="8323" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-description="" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="Reading Quest Board" data-large-file="https://readatmidnight.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/reading-quest-board1.png?w=656?w=656" data-medium-file="https://readatmidnight.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/reading-quest-board1.png?w=656?w=300" data-orig-file="https://readatmidnight.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/reading-quest-board1.png?w=656" data-orig-size="2500,2500" data-permalink="https://readatmidnight.com/2017/07/29/thereadingquest-sign-up/reading-quest-board/" height="400" src="https://readatmidnight.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/reading-quest-board1.png?w=656" width="400" />

Basically, the point of the readathon is to read books that fit these video game style quests, especially those by marginalized authors.

So here's my character card! I chose Mage because I love magic and mythology.

And here are the books I plan to read! Depending on whether or not I get them in time from the library (I'll be out of town at the beginning of the readathon), it may change. I also made a spreadsheet (I love spreadsheets) to keep track of my books and points!

Character Quests:

I'd like to read more books than these. My goal is to finish two characters and complete four side quests.

Let me know what you think of these books and if you have any suggestions!

Make Me Read It Read-A-Thon is hosted by Ely and Val.

What is #MakeMeRead?

Look at the books you own, either
physical, e-book or ones you’ve borrowed from the library and pick out a
few you really want to read, or feel like you should read. It’s up to
you how many you pick, personally I’d pick a few more than you expect to
be able to read in a week. Example: if you think you’ll only read two,
pick out five books or if you think you can read seven, pick out ten.
Make
a list of these books on your blog, or make a video, or a Goodreads
shelf or post a picture on Instagram—whatever is easiest for you. Then
get friends, other bloggers/booktubers/bookstagrammers etc. to vote on
which books you HAVE to read.
When the readathon comes along, you
read the books in the order of most votes. For example, if one book gets
10 votes—you read that first, then the one that got 7 and so on. If
there’s a tie, then it’s your preference. The goal is to read as many as
possible.

When is it?

This year the read-a-thon will be
running from August 6th through to August 13th. You can start reading as
soon as it hits 12am in your timezone, or whenever you’d like.
Remember
that the idea is to have people vote on your books, so try and get that
post/Twitter poll/photo up as soon as possible in order to give your
fellow participants the chance to vote!
an explosion destroys his ship, the world believes Prince Merik,
Windwitch, is dead. Scarred yet alive, Merik is determined to prove his
sister’s treachery. Upon reaching the royal capital, crowded with
refugees, he haunts the streets, fighting for the weak—which leads to
whispers of a disfigured demigod, the Fury, who brings justice to the
oppressed.

When the Bloodwitch Aeduan discovers a bounty on
Iseult, he makes sure to be the first to find her—yet in a surprise
twist, Iseult offers him a deal. She will return money stolen from him,
if he locates Safi. Now they must work together to cross the Witchlands,
while constantly wondering, who will betray whom first?

After a
surprise attack and shipwreck, Safi and the Empress of Marstok barely
escape with their lives. Alone in a land of pirates, every moment
balances on a knife’s edge—especially when the pirates’ next move could
unleash war upon the Witchlands.

After the unexpected ending to Truthwitch, Windwitch brings even more surprises. Enemies become allies and must work together to save themselves. Characters are put into difficult situations, and they are forced to think quickly. Their growth is amazing to watch, as we get to see characters mature and become stronger. While many questions are answered in the sequel, there are still many more that we haven't learned yet, and that makes me so excited for the third book in The Witchlands series.

At the end of Truthwitch, all four characters were scattered across the Witchlands: Safi was heading to Marstok, forced to work for the empress; Merik was trying to help is suffering country; Iseult was trying to figure out who she was and save Safi; and Aeduan was off on his own mysterious (as always) endeavors. But at the beginning of Windwitch, everything is upended. People are killed, alliances are formed and broken, and no one knows what to do or what the future holds. All they know is that they must survive and do what they can to save those around them.

Windwitch is very character-driven. The choices they make directly impacts what happens. One wrong move and they're driven into a corner and will do anything they can to get out. Since all of the main characters are spread out, they're forced to survive on their own, and we get a better chance to understand them in these situations. New characters are introduced as well, and even though some are small, they are just as instrumental. The alliances that are formed change the outcome of events, so the characters must fully weigh all their options before they act.

We also learn more about the Witchlands. We get to see new countries and meet new people. We find out how each group of people is impacted by the events for Truthwitch. And some of these groups are not too happy with them. This poses a huge challenge for all of the characters, as many decisions could mean the difference between life and death. This uncertainty kept me on edge, turning pages as fast as I could. Sadly, due to this semester, I had to take a break after about 250 pages. When I finally got back to it a couple weeks later, I was so excited to get back and read the last 150 pages in less than an hour and a half. This was probably the fastest I've ever read, because I had to know what was going to happen next then and there.

Overall, this was a thrilling sequel to an amazing fantasy series. Its fascinating characters kept the book moving with its fast pace. It leaves you second-guessing your predictions and wondering if people truly are the enemy. I can't wait to get my hands on the third book of The Witchlands series. This series has been a thrilling adventure, and we're only halfway through it.

Because I'm a complete mess, I haven't gotten around to sign up for this until now, two days into the readathon. I'd like to blame it all on finals and the holidays, but I'm more than a little forgetful.

I wanted to sign up for this for two reasons. The first is because I LOVE Harry Potter. It's one of my favorite book and movie series, and I am a proud Slytherin. The second is because, to be completely honest, I haven't read many diverse books. This is one of my big goals for this year: Read more diverse books. This has also made me realize that my local library has a very small selection of diverse books and books by #OwnVoices authors. Hopefully I'll find plenty of books to suggest to them! Fortunately they do have a few, and I also had a couple books on my book shelves that fit the criteria!
As a dancer, it makes me so happy to see dance, specifically ballet here, to be the focal point. And it also shows the dark side that can come with dance, such as mental illness and the lack of diversity.

Under a Painted Sky by Stacey Lee

Fans of Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series will be drawn to Wendy Higgins's sexy, thrilling Sweet Evil series.
What
if there were teens whose lives literally depended on being bad
influences? This is the reality for sons and daughters of fallen angels.
Tenderhearted
Southern girl Anna Whitt was born with the sixth sense to see and feel
emotions of other people. She's aware of a struggle within herself, an
inexplicable pull toward danger, but Anna, the ultimate good girl, has
always had the advantage of her angel side to balance the darkness
within. It isn't until she turns sixteen and meets the alluring Kaidan
Rowe that she discovers her terrifying heritage and her willpower is put
to the test. He's the boy your daddy warned you about. If only someone
had warned Anna.
Forced to face her destiny, will Anna embrace her halo or her horns?
Reading the synopsis of this book, I should have known that it just wasn't meant for me. But I wanted to give it a chance, maybe it'd surprise me! However, I think deep down I knew I wouldn't like it, and just wanted to inflict pain on myself, while being very entertained with my reactions to things. I think the author was trying to make this book edgy and sexy, yet the outcome was cheesy, over-the-top, and, at times, cringe-worthy.

I decided to add my status updates from Goodreads in here. It's safe to say I was feeling a bit snarky while reading this book. If you have trouble seeing the picture, here's the link that should take you to it on Goodreads.
We start off with Anna, a sweet, lovely girl who's just too pure for this world. I got an instant Mary Sue feel from this girl. She claims to me nothing special, but she seems to be just so amazing. She says she doesn't care much about her appearance, but then she describes her looks to great lengths. She was adopted when she was a newborn because her father was arrested and her mother dies during childbirth. She also remembers what life was like when she was a mere fetus in her mother's womb; she refers to this time as the "Dark Time" and calls her mother's uterus a "warm hammock." *barfs* Well, there goes my breakfast. She then puts the icing on this warm, squishy cake by describing being born. All I could think of was those super long Pro-Life stories people would put in their Fan Fiction bios. Even though I'm not Pro-Life and have no problem with people who are, this kind of felt like that and it made me uncomfortable at times. Oh, did I forget to add that she doesn't like showing skin because she feels bad for boys and their hormones?

Yeah. That happened.

And then there's Kaiden. He's 17 and already a master of sex. Yep, I bet you can guys which of the 7 (actually 12 in this book) deadly sins he's the spawn of. He sleeps with any female that comes his way, has masculine knuckles, and chuckles deeply. Yes, those last two points were used to describe him (look at picture for proof). He's your stereotypical Young Adult Paranormal Romance Love Interest. He's gorgeous, mysterious, rude towards the main character, and makes her want to completely change herself. He has a bad reputation, but Anna's convinced she can change him because she immediately falls in lurve with him. Haha, no. But still, they form a relationship where he calls her "Little Ann" (such a sweet and totally not condescending nickname) and they hold pinky fingers instead of hands (what?).

As you can see, this book totally did not click with me. But I guess not every book is for every person. Looking through Goodreads, that's pretty evident as it seems most people love this book, and I'm in the minority of people who did not like it at all. However, I do give the author points for creativity. I haven't seen too many books where the 7 deadly sins are the concept, so this is really interesting.

Overall, despite being intrigued by the concept, I just could not connect to this book at all. The characters just seemed so flat and annoyed me the entire time, as Anna was the typical Mary Sue and Kaiden the token Bad Boy. I doubt I'll continue on with this series, unless I was to see if it entertains me (in a bad way) like this one did.

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Aprilynne Pike comes a truly original new novel—Breaking Bad
meets Marie Antoinette in a near-future world where the residents of
Versailles live like it’s the eighteenth century and an almost-queen
turns to drug dealing to save her own life.

Outside
the palace of Versailles, it’s modern day. Inside, the people dress,
eat, and act like it’s the eighteenth century—with the added bonus of
technology to make court life lavish, privileged, and frivolous. The
palace has every indulgence, but for one pretty young thing, it’s about
to become a very beautiful prison.
When Danica witnesses an act of
murder by the young king, her mother makes a cruel power play . . .
blackmailing the king into making Dani his queen. When she turns
eighteen, Dani will marry the most ruthless and dangerous man of the
court. She has six months to escape her terrifying destiny. Six months
to raise enough money to disappear into the real world beyond the palace
gates.
Her ticket out? Glitter. A drug so powerful that a tiny
pinch mixed into a pot of rouge or lip gloss can make the wearer
hopelessly addicted. Addicted to a drug Dani can sell for more money
than she ever dreamed.
But in Versailles, secrets are impossible to
keep. And the most dangerous secret—falling for a drug dealer outside
the palace walls—is one risk she has to take.

I haven't read anything by this author yet, but it sounds so good! A girl sells drugs to get out of an arranged marriage? Why not! Plus I'm super excited for the Versailles setting! It's so opulent and over the top.
