Top Ten Tuesday #66: Ten Books That Should Be Read In Creative Writing Classes

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

This Week's Topic:
Ten Books That Should Be Read In Creative Writing Classes

When I took a Creative Writing class in high school, we would spend one day each week just reading, so here are a few books that I think students should read!

1.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1)

2.
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (Chronicles of Narnia, #1)

3.
Wither (The Chemical Garden, #1)

4.
Something Strange and Deadly (Something Strange and Deadly, #1)

5.
Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1)

6.
The Bad Beginning (A Series of Unfortunate Events, #1)

7.
Shatter Me (Shatter Me, #1)

8.
A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1)

9.
Shadow and Bone (The Grisha, #1)

10.
Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #1)

If I were to teach Creative Writing, I'd want my students to read a wide variety of works. From Middle Grade to New Adult, and Fantasy to Historical Fiction, I'd want them to experience different genres to find out which one they like the most. DoSaB was actually recommended to me by my CW teacher, and I recommended The Chemical Garden Trilogy to her after she saw the chapter page design.

What would you have your Creative Writing students read?

Waiting on Wednesday #36: "Furthermore" by Tahereh Mafi

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly event, hosted Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Furthermore

Title: "Furthermore"
Author: Tahereh Mafi
Expected Publication: August 30, 2016

There are only three things that matter to twelve-year-old Alice Alexis Queensmeadow: Mother, who wouldn’t miss her; magic and color, which seem to elude her; and Father, who always loved her. The day Father disappears from Ferenwood he takes nothing but a ruler with him. But it’s been almost three years since then, and Alice is determined to find him. She loves her father even more than she loves adventure, and she’s about to embark on one to find the other.

But bringing Father home is no small matter. In order to find him she’ll have to travel through the mythical, dangerous land of Furthermore, where down can be up, paper is alive, and left can be both right and very, very wrong. Her only companion is a boy named Oliver whose own magical ability is based in lies and deceit—and with a liar by her side in land where nothing is as it seems, it will take all of Alice's wits (and every limb she's got) to find Father and return home to Ferenwood in one piece. On her quest to find Father Alice must first find herself—and hold fast to the magic of love in the face of loss.
I feel like I've been waiting for this book for forever. For the longest time it was just a title and small synopsis, with no information as to when it might be published. And maybe the wait felt longer because Ignite Me was released and I needed more of Tahereh Mafi's writing to help fill the void in my chest that was left by Juliette, Warner, and Kenji. But there's now a date and a beautiful cover, so now I can finally count down the days!

"Destroy Me (Shatter Me, #1.5)" by Tahereh Mafi

Destroy Me (Shatter Me, #1.5)5 out of 5 stars

Read January 4, 2014

Pages: 103
Published: January 1, 2012
Publisher: Harper

I already loved Warner, but now I love him even more! We get to see everything through Warner's eyes, which I've wanted to read since I started Shatter Me. He has all this inner turmoil and I'm usually turned off by it, but for some reason I loved it!!! I'm in love with him so much and if for some reason Juliette is stupid and chooses Adam, I'll make Warner VERY happy!!!

Here are some gifs of another sexy bad boy with inner turmoil that I love:

Overall, this novella was amazing and I can't wait for Ignite Me!!!!! It comes out in 4 days but I can't wait much longer! GAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
