Bout of Books 20: Wrap Up

 Bout of Books 20

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 21st and runs through Sunday, August 27th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 20 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team

So Bout of Books is over, and it went pretty well. I read quite a bit and finished a few books, but sadly life got in the way a few days so I wasn't able to read or accomplish as much as I had hoped.

Goals:
-Finish Serpentine by Cindy Pon (#TheReadingQuest)
-Finish Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo (#TheReadingQuest)
-Finish Uninvited by Sophie Jordan (Leftover from #Unhaulathon
-Read Want by Cindy Pon (#TheReadingQuest)
-Read The Young Elites by Marie Lu
-Complete 3 daily challenges
-Finish the Mage Quest for #TheReadingQuest
-Decide and start books for #RainbowReadathon17 and #WWReadathon

I accomplished 4 of my goals (finish Serpentine and Uninvited and read The Young Elites). I started Want, but I'm getting through it slowly. I'm having trouble getting into it, so I hope that changes soon! I also decided and started my books for #RainbowReadathon17 and #WWReadathon, so I started Slasher Girls and Monster Boys. I'm not someone who loves scary things, so some of these stories have really creeped me out!

I can only hope I can get this much done for the next Bout of Books!

I'm combining this with #TheReadingQuest and #RainbowReadathon, so it should help me finish up some more books before my semester starts up.

The bingo I'm working towards will be the one that goes from the upper left hand corner to the lower right hand corner.

  • Contemporary-Shiny Broken Pieces by Sona Charaipotra and Dhonielle Clayton
  • Free Space-Scarlet by A.C. Gaughen
  • Book You Bought for the Cover-The Unnaturalists by Tiffany Trent
  • Science Fiction-The Hunt by Megan Shepherd
Most of these books work for the #RainbowReadathon and all work for #TheReading Quest!

These are all books I've really enjoyed, so I want to spread the word. Sure, The Young Elites is popular, but I think Susan Dennard (especially her Something Strange and Deadly trilogy), Lia Habel, and Megan Shepherd deserve more love and attention. Yesterday was pretty disappointing, but I didn't get home until 6pm and then I had to make dinner. I was pretty exhausted, so I didn't have much motivation. Hoping today will be better!

As you can see, this was a huge reading day for me. I finished three of my goals for this readathon, and I feel like this has been my most successful Bout of Books so far! I'm hoping I can finish at least one more book, as I primarily am hoping to finish my Mage Quest for #TheReadingQuest! I'm pretty sure non of the other days this week will be like today.

So I finished one of my goals, and that was to finish Serpentine. For #TheReadingQuest, that means I finished my fourth book total and my third book for my Mage Quest. I liked it, but I didn't love it. I started The Young Elites, my fourth book for the quest. Even though I'm not that far, I'm liking it so far.

#TheReadingQuest Sign Up

The Reading Quest Sign Up Post

#TheReadingQuest is hosted by Aentee at Read at Midnight. Artwork is by CW at Read, Think, Ponder.

For complete instructions, go to Aentee's blog, but here are the basics:
  • The basic mechanics of the reading challenge is simple: it’s based on a bingo board (termed The Quest Board for our purposes), each square on the board represents a stage (or reading prompt) you must complete. There is one crucial variation, the path you take on the bingo board is entirely dependent on your chosen Character Class.
  • Along with the separate Character Class quest levels (Purple Squares), the centre of the Quest Board is a conglomeration of Side Quests (Blue Squares)! Complete these challenges to earn extra points and bonus experience for your character.

Reading Quest Board

Basically, the point of the readathon is to read books that fit these video game style quests, especially those by marginalized authors.

So here's my character card! I chose Mage because I love magic and mythology.

And here are the books I plan to read! Depending on whether or not I get them in time from the library (I'll be out of town at the beginning of the readathon), it may change. I also made a spreadsheet (I love spreadsheets) to keep track of my books and points!

Character Quests:
  • A Book with a One Word Title-Riders by Veronica Rossi
  • A Book that Contains Magic-A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica Cluess
  • A Book Based on Mythology-The Dark Wife by Sarah Diemers
  • A Book Set in a Different World-Serpentine by Cindy Pon
  • The First Book of a Series-Want by Cindy Pon

Side Quests:
  • Potions-Shiny Broken Pieces by Dhonielle Clayton and Sona Charaipotra
  • Time Warp-The Fallen Kingdom by Elizabeth May
  • Grind-Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

I'd like to read more books than these. My goal is to finish two characters and complete four side quests.

Let me know what you think of these books and if you have any suggestions!
