How far will you go when you have nothing left to lose?
When she lost her soul mate, Caleb, Eve felt like her world had ended. Trapped in the palace, forced to play the part of the happy, patriotic princess of The New America—and the blushing bride of her father's top adviser—Eve's whole life is a lie. The only thing that keeps her going is Caleb's memory, and the revolution he started.
Now, Eve is taking over where Caleb left off. With the help of Moss, an undercover subversive in the King's court, she plots to take down The New America, beginning with the capital, the City of Sand. Will Eve be able to bring about a new, free world when she's called upon to perform the ultimate act of rebellion—killing her father?
In Rise, Eve must choose who to leave behind, who to save, and who to fight as Anna Carey's epic tale of romance and sacrifice in the chilling dystopia of The New America comes to a stunning conclusion.

This book just made me so sad. Not because I loved this series or anything, but because this series had so much potential. Girls raised in boarding schools only to be sent to hospitals to live their lives like cows by constantly being impregnated to make the population larger. However, instead of becoming an action-packed, thrilling adventure, this trilogy was all about one little girl (well, not that little since she's 16 or something) being a dumbass. She's unhappy when she escapes the boarding school, even though that means she won't be forced to have kids constantly, and then complains when she becomes a fucking princess. Like, this girl is NEVER happy. NEVER. Only when Caleb is around. And he's dead in this one so Eve is constantly complaining about how her life sucks even though SHE LIVES IN A PALACE AND CAN ACTUALLY HAVE NICE THINGS AND BE SAFE. What's the point of having basic necessities when you don't have the love of your life, whom you've only known FOR A FEW MONTHS.

Me the entire book. An upset mess just wanting to hurt a fictiol character. No big deal. Nothing new.

You know Maslow's triangle of needs? No? Here it is:

Eve's triangle of needs would just have Caleb in every single section. Honey, there are much more important things in life than boys. You have ONE REALLY IMPORTANT THING to worry about in this book, Eve. Yet all you could do was cry over Caleb and not worry about THAT REALLY IMPORTANT THING that really needs your attention. Sadly, THAT REALLY IMPORTANT THING is not a puppy. If only. But Eve probably would have let that thing die just like she did with Caleb.

She just was never happy and she hardly did anything. Even when she did things, she had other people doing most of the work. Throughout this series she just seemed to have lost any motivation and will. With everything that was happening in this book, she should have gotten MORE passion and motivation. My god she just became a huge wimp.

I also need to add that the ending was just SO predictable. I called it from the very beginning. It's really sad. I hate it when I can predict the ending, especially when it really isn't even all that good.

Eve
Dumb. Stupid. Total idiot. Selfish. Whiny. Pathetic. And even more unflattering adjectives.

Caleb
He's dead for most of it. Or does he...

Charles
He does so much to try to help Eve and make her happy, but it's just never enough for her. Poor guy.

Overall, a crappy ending to a meh trilogy. I was hoping that this book would redeem everything, but it didn't. This was by far the worst book out of the three.

  1. awh, what a shame. I read the first book in this series and I liked it but didn't love it. I never continued on.

    Great Review!

  2. Wow. That's too bad. Props to you for finishing, though I suppose by the middle of the third book you were just running on sheer determination and the need to see if your predictions were correct. (Or maybe that's just me? :-D)

  3. I'm disappointed by this review. On the one hand, I don't know a lot of people that have read this series--and I liked the first two. I bought this one awhile back but haven't read it. Seeing the two stars, and hearing your gripes doesn't give me much to look forward to. Too bad. Hope your next read is better!

  4. I'm sad you didn't like this more... I have wanted to read this series, but been unsure because I haven't read too many good reviews. Now I am still unsure. It doesn't look promising :P
